In order to present the main types and features of renewable energy sources (RES) to the municipalities, U-LEAD organised a number of events on energy security and involved industry experts in working with local self-government. Two seminars have already been held, one on renewable energy sources and another on the prospects and practices of using solar energy for power supply.
The first event was attended by deputy heads of villages, towns and cities, professionals responsible for housing and utility infrastructure and energy efficiency from municipalities from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv and Cherkasy Oblasts. Info sessions were held by the team of the U-LEAD Regional Office in the Donetsk Oblast.
Vitalii Lesiuk and Andrii Barulin, energy efficiency experts at U-LEAD with Europe, worked with municipalities. They provided general information about RES and explained that the Law of Ukraine “On Alternative Energy Sources” defines renewable energy sources as renewable non-fossil energy sources, namely solar, wind, aerothermal, geothermal, hydrothermal, wave and tidal energy, hydropower, energy from biomass, gas from biowaste, gas from sewage treatment plants, biogas.
The experts further focused on each of the types of alternative energy sources and explained the principles of operation of solar systems, wind power plants, organic waste and biogas, geothermal plants, sewage heat and hydropower.
According to Maksym Tkach, Head of this Regional Office, the second event focused on the main technologies, prospects and practices of using solar energy for electricity supply or heating of municipalities:
“The second info session allowed the municipalities to learn about the basic concepts, working principles and modern technologies of using solar energy, work out the specifics of each technology together with the experts, as well as study the experiences of Ukrainian municipalities that have implemented similar projects at their municipal facilities.”
